Style Trick: Use Office Furniture Outside the Office

Sometimes it’s hard to put your finger on just what is a bit edgy about a room that’s catching your attention. One trick is using school and office furniture in different rooms around the house. Whether it’s a classic card catalogue, flat file or a desk-turned-dining table, these bits can add flair and function to dining rooms, living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.

A little file cabinet with a drawer at the top is just the perfect height for the couch, and its shape works nicely with the area’s clean lines.

Following is a room with the exact same idea but executed in a more traditional style.

In my own little dining room, I use a desk my great-great grandfather built as a dining room table. The other dining table hand-me-downs out there within my loved ones are too large for the space; the dining table is only perfect. Plus, whenever my Aunt Sally visits, she informs me she recalls doing homework at it when she was a woman, which is pretty cool.

Tip: If you’ve got a desk similar to this but the elevation is too low, use castors to add an inch or two on the table. Conversely, if the table is a bit too high, add chair cushions to your dining chairs.
