Color Magic: Tap Into Psychology to Better Use Blue in Home

Several paint companies have suggested some shade of blue, from aqua to indigo, as a favorite color for 2013. The color that’s cited most often as a favored, blue represents calm, serenity, stability, conservatism, ability (that is the reason why it’s a favorite choice for uniforms), wisdom, honesty and loyalty. Some blue tones may also be viewed as cold, which may create feelings of sadness and aloofness.

Let us take a look at what color specialists, psychologists and cultural references may inform us about this-much adored color — and at how to use it in our homes.

Curing properties. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese often practiced chromotherapy — using colours to cure. Sometimes called mild therapy or colorology, chromotherapy is still used today as a holistic or alternative health treatment.

Really, a contemporary interpreter of chromotherapy, Edwin Babbitt, said in his 1878 work, The Basics of Color Therapy, that “the blue ray is one of the greatest antiseptics on the planet.” It’s thought to soothe illnesses and treat pain.

Buddhists recommend the blue lapis lazuli stone to bring internal peace. June McLeod, author of Colors of the Soul, agrees with blue’s calming power — particularly shades of sky blue. Use this mild and restorative hue to create a truly relaxing bathroom.

Blue bloods. The ancient Egyptians used the lapis lazuli rock to dye the cloaks of royals and priests, indicating their status. We see these rich celestial hues as royal and exotic, so they work beautifully on feature walls or in small spaces, like this powder room.

Protective possessions. In areas of Europe, cupolas, doors, staircases, fences and exteriors were painted blue to protect the house from evil. Polish custom once dictated that all houses for women about to be married be painted blue.

Back in 1932 Robert M. Gerard, a California psychologist, conducted a study that determined the effect of light on blood pressure at a New England hospital. Staff members with ordinary blood pressure had been subjected to red and blue light for half an hour each. Universally, the grim light resulted in a fall in blood pressure, while the red light resulted in a rise in blood pressure.

Feeling blue. Back in 1901, influenced by the suicide of a fantastic buddy, Picasso began his Blue Period, in which he always used blue palettes in his job. These bits were rather austere and cool, and so were unpopular with the general people.

Whilst blue is often cited as a chilly and even gloomy color, tones with a hint of reddish feel warmer. Unlike cool blues, hot blues progress toward you, making them a more comfy choice for a social area like a living room. The accent wall in this room feels anything but chilly and aloof, despite the concrete, marble and gray.

Out of the blue. Blue is known to curb the appetite, perhaps as an adaptation against eating rotten food, which may have a bluish tinge. Really, some weight-loss apps go so far as to suggest eating off a blue plate.

A blue dining room could be great for people wanting to slim down, but it may not be the right choice for foodies.

Blue-sky believing. Blue is often used to decorate offices, since research has indicated that people tend to be more productive in blue rooms. In 2009 a study from the University of British Colombia showed that blue boosts our capacity to think creatively, which kids analyzed higher on IQ tests in rooms with blue ceilings. This makes blue a perfect color choice for a study.

Feng shui’s take on blue. According to feng shui design fundamentals, blue is a water component, excellent to be used in the east (health and household) and southeast (prosperity and abundance) sides of your house or office — water energy is said to nourish the wood component of these areas.
