Interior designer Emily Mughannam’s clients needed their kids to share 1 space in their San Francisco home, but the kids’ different ages made for a layout challenge: The nursery needed to be stimulating enough for a toddler while being serene sufficient for a 5-month-old. The end result is an area that’s fun, exciting and appealing to both children — and their parents, who love the sophisticated yet completely playful mod look of the space.

Mughannam picked a set of Oeuf Sparrow cribs in walnut; they readily convert into toddler beds. She put them against the walls, creating more floor space at the center of the room for drama. Plush carpeting and tactile cries are easy on a crawling infant’s knees and cushion the fall of a speedy toddler.

“They needed the room to coordinate with the rest of the adult home, so we maintained the nursery clean and modern,” says Mughannam. “My customers also wanted the space to be wholly presentable once the door is left open, so the furnishings within the room can readily be found in someone’s living room or bedroom. It doesn’t shout ‘baby.'”

Nursery shelving (previous photograph) homes family photos, playful curios and often-used books for night reading. A favored sock fighter goes over to the 2-year-old’s bed during the night, joining a traveling cushion.

Breakable items are out of reach on higher shelves, or at the dresser or closet, so little hands can’t grab them. Lower-level things have thicker borders or are completely for the kids.
“The customers like lots of white and gray, which is evident in the remainder of the house, but they also enjoy the occasional pop of vivid colour for colors and artwork,” says Mughannam.
