Sleek

With the change of the seasons, a number of you may have begun using the fireplace, or are at least thinking about it. And maybe you’re considering the look of yours?

Whether your leaning is contemporary or traditional, brick, tile or rock slab, then there are countless ways to look for a fireplace surround. Here, we will look at rock slab options. Do not be intimidated by this often-overlooked project. If you’re not in love with your current fireplace, consider a redesign of the surround, mantle or both.

This design is contemporary and traditional at the same moment. The simple molding is thick and wide, but additionally, it has a clean look, as a result of the mitered corners and how it is white-on-white with the simple charcoal grey slab rock surround. This is a great design for someone with a contemporary aesthetic in a house with conventional architecture.

Tip: Stone slab material can be more expensive than stone tile, but look for remnant material at your local stone provider.

To get a more traditional look, a traditional white wood mantel and Cararra marble slab surround is a great look that may work with any interior.

This strange contemporary application of taupe-brown rock slab (I am guessing a marble such as Labrador Antique Light) trimmed with a sleek metallic edge complements the dark paneled walls. I love the way the mantel is painted exactly the same black as the walls. This is a great way to create a space contemporary and traditional at the same moment.

Here’s a more Old-World rock mantel and fitting stone (I am guessing limestone or travertine). The hearth is raised off the floor and the slab material continues throughout the plan.

Or go for no mantel at all. Slab material is great for this kind of fireplace design; it is simple, sleek and contemporary. The thick, raised hearth out of the same slab material is another intriguing detail.

Here a honed black granite surround is flush with the walls and the floor and nicely complements the flush installment of the gas fireplace. Notice the way the rock slab operates further out on the sides to accentuate the rectangle.

Here’s another slab installment in stunning Calacatta marble, however this one is only slightly raised from the plane of the wall. This design could have easily had the rock run all of the way to the ceiling, however I like the way that it stops partway up the walls and also the way the fireplace is higher from the ground than normal. This is ideal for the workplace, which means you may get whole perspective of the fireplace at all times from behind your desk.

If you’re searching for a bit more detail than an easy slab, but you don’t need a timber surround, then consider ways to care for the rock with more detail. Here the rock ledge projects beyond the face of the surround on the exterior edge, and the surround is stepped to give the rock a shadow line and more architectural detail.

Here’s a more contemporary program using two kinds of rock: a mix of charcoal grey and white marble. The simple detail of the raised hearth and peek of white marble beneath is quite contemporary and sculptural.

Fireplaces don’t need to be symmetrical. I adore the simplicity of the simple rock ledge and offset firebox and the way the rock slab runs the full length of the wall.
