6 Places to Boost Your Spirits

It has been a tough, odd week for many people across the States. Hurricane Sandy ravaged the Eastern Seaboard, leaving thousands of people at the mercy of nature. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, while my household rejoiced on the Giants’ becoming Major League Baseball’s champions after their World Series sweep, we nursed a lingering unease about the loss of lives and houses on the opposite coast.

The mixed bag of information has me nesting over usual, and I have been finding myself retreating to comfy spots at home. Whether you’re reeling from the information of the hurricane, nursing a sick kid or simply having a difficult week, a relaxing area in your home could be a balm for the soul.

By the Soaking Tub

Running water is among the most soothing noises, and thankfully one that may be had with ease for many of us, whether you’re in a very small studio in the city or within a spacious ranch house in the ‘burbs.

Here, a comfortable slipcovered armchair from the tub offers a view, the noise of running water along with the expectation of a warm soak, even if it’s just for 10 minutes.

This stunning master bath by Jessica Helgerson combines two of my favorite things: reading and bathing. I love how the classic floor lamp allows someone read through the wee hours, rather following a both relaxing and protracted soak in the tub.

Enclosed in Drawn Curtains

A luxurious four-poster bed becomes an area in a room when its curtains are drawn. The choice of visually and physically separating the bed from the desk-turned-nightstand makes disconnecting from the entire world — and also one’s gadgets, frequently placed bedside — that much easier.

Within this coastal weekend home, bunk beds visually delight with color punches and nautical stripes while providing each guest some privacy from both the external world and many others in the room. Because sometimes, even while on vacation with our loved ones, we need a little me time.

Perched on a Window Seat

The best chair in this master suite is your banquette, which overlooks this Bay Area penthouse’s environs. The picture window and niche give the homeowner a opportunity to silence his or her thoughts, and at the minimum, the spectacular views can uplift the soul.

Under the Stairs

Designer Steven Gambrel turned out an unused closet into this serene, understairs escape. The accession of a window along with the cozy, upholstered built-in make it the ideal location for tea with a friend after a long work week.

I’m in love with this traditional house’s understairs phone corner, even if only because of its nostalgia. It frees up long and lazy day calls into a faraway friend. A dedicated place for mobile usage is a rarity today, when lots of individuals lay their heads on comfy cushions right next to smart phones that blink and vibrate during the evening.

From the Laundry Room

The homeowners of this laundry room, which was a cellar, make something clear: They really understand how to make a person happy. A chilly and at times dark garage often homes washers and dryers, but that I could easily find my moment of Zen and attain a very happy place along with my feet kicked up on the coffee table, mid spin bicycle, watching the latest shows on the Travel Channel.

About the Rocker-Glider

Anyone who has ever spent the night rocking a baby to sleep on a comfy rocker-glider will inform you that they’re well worth their exorbitant cost. Our rocker-glider works difficult for the entire family, but first and foremost it supports my back, sitting kid on tough, sniffly nights. Along with a little-known secret I will share with you is that I frequently use our rocker-glider for day naps, weekend read-a-thons and me time.
