Kids' Rooms Hold a World of Possibilities

Princesses and superheroes are all well and good, but they do not last long. Sure, a 5-year-old might love them, but what about a 10-year-old?

My fundamental rule for nurseries and kids’ rooms is to produce something that is youthful and lively but that won’t be entirely useless in five decades. That’s why I love these kids’ rooms influenced by global design. They are beautiful, fun, and timeless.

Global design is a close relative to eclectic design. While it sometimes takes the kind of one theme — state, an African room — it frequently mixes colours, patterns and things from throughout the world to make a lively, living room.

Draping an Indian block-print fabric against the wall piled up this nursery and creates a comfy pocket round the crib.

Who’s a playhouse must look like an English cottage? This tepee is simple and fun (and cuter, if you ask me).

This map mural is a more literal take on the global theme. And also the Innit rocker adds a little contemporary tropical into the mixture.

The layered fabrics and feel in this room give it an exotic vibe, particularly those suzani floor pillows and bright orange throws.

The Moroccan pouf is now an iconic piece in eclectic decor. It makes a perfect footrest and adds a touch of the casbah to this kids’ room.

All that white is Scandinavian. The hammock is from Latin America. And the wall map is simply plain internationally minded.

Jeanette Lunde

This is not exactly exotic, but it’s also very Scandinavian. Colorful details against an all-white background are a dead giveaway.

There are delicate touches of this exotic in this otherwise traditional and subdued woman’s room. The form of the headboard evokes Middle Eastern architecture. The table lamps have a Moroccan filigree texture, and the combined textures and patterns of this wall, blanket and bed give it a global lushness.

Here is 1 way to bring the entire world to the room: Stick the Taj Mahal on the wall. This nursery was created particularly to inspire fascination with the world.

Big Ben is in the exact same nursery. So is a richly coloured MIddle Eastern patchwork rug.

This neutral and formal nursery is enlivened by bright Mexican fiesta pompoms, a variety of poufs and floor pillows, and an African-inspired pink zebra rug.
